Changing Cabinet Hardware During Refinishing
New pulls can transform the design, but hole filling and redrilling require careful layout and substrate-appropriate repairs.
When holes need to be filled
Changing from knobs to pulls, changing pull centers, or correcting an inconsistent layout can leave unused holes that must be repaired before priming.
Repair method
The right method depends on the door material, hole size, edge distance, and intended finish. Repairs may involve fitted wood, structural filler, or a combination, followed by sanding and priming.
Layout accuracy
New hardware should be templated and test-fit. Existing door profiles, drawer widths, appliance clearances, and symmetry affect placement.
