Cabinet Painting Buyer’s Guide
A practical checklist for comparing cabinet refinishing proposals without relying only on the lowest price.
Questions to ask any cabinet refinisher
- What cleaning and sanding steps are included?
- How are doors and drawers labeled and stored?
- Which primer and topcoat system will be used?
- Are repairs and hardware-hole changes included?
- How are counters, floors, appliances, and openings protected?
- What is the expected schedule and cure guidance?
- What does the written warranty cover and exclude?
Red flags
- A price based only on square footage without a component count or inspection.
- No written scope, coating system, or exclusions.
- Little discussion of grease removal, adhesion, cure, or site protection.
- Promises that every finish is completely chip-proof.
Prepare for an estimate
Count doors and drawer fronts, photograph the full room and close-ups of damage, note hardware changes, identify the desired color direction, and decide whether interiors are included.
