Can Oak Cabinets Be Painted?
Yes. The main design choice is whether to preserve some natural grain texture or pursue a smoother, grain-reduced finish.
Why oak looks different after painting
Oak has open pores and pronounced grain. Paint changes the color but does not automatically erase that texture.
Standard preparation
Cleaning, sanding, repairs, and compatible priming prepare oak for a cabinet coating. Some grain may remain visible after finishing.
Grain reduction
Additional grain-filling steps can reduce texture, but they add labor and may not create a perfectly flat manufactured-MDF appearance. The desired level of grain reduction should be written into the estimate.
